Artwork of the Day by Cop Shiva

Author: Staff Writer

Cop Shiva was born in a village in the Ramnagaram district of Karnataka and works primarily in the medium of photography. Originally part of an alternative art collective, he joined Karnataka Police Department and Cop Shiva was born.

No Longer a Memory is part of an ongoing project where the artist recreates and reimagines his childhood memories with his mother through photography. His motivation stems from his childhood: "Growing up, we didn’t have a single photograph together, and that absence became the starting point for this work. Through these images, I try to build those missing visual memories by staging moments of play, intimacy, and everyday life that we once shared but were never documented". The process is both personal and reflective, exploring memory, loss, and reconstruction.

Cop Shiva is an artist and photographer who started his artistic journey as part of an alternative art collective called 1.SHANHTIROAD STUDIO/GALLERY in Bangalore. In 2002 he joined Karnataka Police Department and has worked exclusively as an artist since 2010.

The artist's works have featured in numerous magazines and exhibitions including Chobi Mela in Bangladesh, Chennai Photo Biennale and Kochi Biennale in India, and Kunsthaus Langenthal in Switzerland.

Shiva's work includes intimate portraits of urban migrants, people of alternative lifestyle, street performers and others living in the hinterland of urban and rural conflict. His ongoing projects continue to capture "the diversity of humans who live on the edge and represent the spirit of our times".
